Microstructure
Alloy 400 is a solid-solution binary alloy. Since nickel and copper are mutually soluble in all proportions, it is a single-phase alloy. It has a face-centered cubic lattice structure with a lattice parameter of 3.534 Å.
Alloy 400 Characteristics
Excellent overall performance as a corrosion-resistant alloy, suitable for a wide range of applications;
Outstanding corrosion resistance in hydrofluoric acid and fluorine media, as well as good resistance to hot strong alkaline solutions;
Resistant to corrosion in neutral solutions, water, seawater, air, organic compounds, and other environments;
A key feature is its excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and good machinability.
Corrosion Resistance
Alloy 400 exhibits superior resistance to many reducing media and generally performs better in oxidizing media than high-copper alloys, making it suitable for various environments;
Widely used in marine applications, where it demonstrates very low corrosion rates in flowing seawater;
However, stagnant conditions may lead to crevice and pitting corrosion;
It is resistant to stress corrosion cracking and pitting in most freshwater and industrial water environments;
Offers exceptional resistance to hydrofluoric acid in all concentrations, even at boiling temperatures, making it one of the most resistant engineering alloys available;
Also resistant to various forms of sulfuric and hydrochloric acid corrosion under reducing conditions.
Applications
Alloy 400 is widely used across various industrial applications, including:
Feed-water and steam generators in power plants;
Brine heaters and evaporator bodies in seawater desalination plants;
Pumps and valves used in the manufacture of chlorinated hydrocarbons;
Cladding for crude oil distillation columns;
Splash-zone sheathing in offshore structures;
Uranium refining and isotope separation plants in nuclear fuel production;
Propeller and pump shafts for seawater service.
